Week 6

Week of September 28th - October 4th

Monday (45 minutes)
Ran around Granite Hills again. I kept a pretty good pace and ended up running about 4.5 miles or somewhere around that. It felt really great. After the race on Saturday, I feel so much more confident and I'm getting that runner's high! Love it and it's so much fun. I love seeing the same people out on the road. It's nice to know that they're committed to whatever it is they're doing, too. When I don't see certain people, I start to worry about them and wonder why they didn't make it out that morning. :o) I'm still not running with an iPod. Don't want to get attached to one. I like my thinking time anyway. Not too much more to report, other than I'm just truckin' along!

Tuesday (30 minutes)
Today's run was good. I wasn't really feelin' it today, though. I completed my 30 minutes and felt good afterwards, but I took it slower than usual. Just wanting to take it easy so there aren't any issues. Went to the temple this afternoon for a session and stopped by Deseret Book, too. Love books!!!

Wednesday (30 minutes)
Went running. Not too much to say. Felt good. So, I'm running along near Kennedy Park and I hear some voices behind me. I look and 5 very handsome firemen were gaining on me. I ended up running with them for a bit before they turned back into the park. Nice little boost during my run!!! I'll be heading up to L.A. this morning to see Neal on America's Got Talent!! Safe driving vibes..........

Thursday (rest/walk)
Soooo tired this morning. I was at the America's Got Talent Finale show yesterday where my best friend, Neal, WON!!! Crazy and I still can't believe it.........$1 million and a headline show in Vegas. I'm still in shock. Anyway, just went walking with Marli and Coco and took it easy. Super hot today!! Blech!

Friday (45 minutes)
Today's run felt really really good. It wasn't too hot, so that was nice. Saw the firemen again......always a nice little surprise on my runs. :o) Ran around Granite and walked home with Coco and Marli. Knees feel great and my body is getting more fit. I love it! Have a booth at Oktoberfest tomorrow, so I'll be running in the evening with Coco. Should be great!

Saturday (30 minutes - no run)
Didn't get to run today as I was on my feet in heels all day at Oktoberfest. It was totally worth it and I'm excited to call everyone and book appointments!

Week 5

Week of September 21st - 27th

Monday (45 minutes running)
Ran around Granite Hills again, but this time, I kept going up Madison all the way to Greenfield and then around the school. Then, I came back around and went down the little side streets to chew up some more time and then back to the Bueno's. It felt good and I'm likin' the new shoes! Feels so good to have that nice spring that comes with new shoes. :o) It also felt good to run after not running for two days.......Gotta keep it up!

Tuesday (30 minutes)
Ran with Coco and Marli behind me around Granite. We waited until about 3 in the afternoon, which was probably not the best time to run. All the kids were getting out of school and it was HOT!!! I felt very fatigued so I kept it very slow. Still got my 30 minutes in and still lovin' my new shoes!! I got my bib number for the race this Saturday. I feel very official now. Woo hoo. :o)

Wednesday (45 minutes walking)
Pretty much just took it easy today with walking around Granite. Not much to report. Feels good and I'm noticing a change in my body. Stronger legs and everything is just kinda toning up. Nice!

Thursday (30 minutes running)
Today's run felt SOOOO good!!! Ran around Granite again and caught back up with Marli and Coco after lapping them. I caught up sooner than I ever have before and if my calculations are correct, I'm running about a 10 minute mile, if not just below 10. Not too bad for a beginner! I am eager to see how I do on Saturday. No hurting body parts. Knees feel great, and my body is becoming more flexible due to all the stretching. I've missed it!!! Ibis, Mom, Coco, Alfy and Marli will be there to cheer me on at the race. It's funny, but the Bueno's are so completely into sports that Alfredo is all into it and making sure that I'm taking care of my feet and everything. I've never been an athlete, so this is definitely new to me. But, the Bueno's are so used to track, basketball, soccer and baseball that it's totally their thing. It's great to have all this support. :o)

Friday (45 minutes walking)
Just walked around Granite today. Felt good and I'm gonna be eatin' me some spaghetti tonight. I feel ready for the race and I'm super excited about!

Saturday (5K race)
Woo hoo!! Just got back from the race and I'm soooooo excited with how I did! I ran better than I have during training. It felt good. My time was 0:28:27.7 and I finished 5th in my age class and 78th overall. Not too bad for my first official race! I'm grateful to everyone who came and supported me and also to those who have helped me with my training. Couldn't have done this without learning from you. :o) Turns out my pace was a 9:00 minute mile. Not too shabby for where I am right now. Next race is October 25th! Gonna shave some time off. Pics of this race coming soon.............

Race Stats:
-0:28:27.7 minutes
-5th place in age group (25-29, 15 ladies in age group)
-78th overall (don't recall how many were there, hundreds??)
-9:00 minute pace

The race overall was pretty good. Very flat and fast. I started off and people were passing me, but I didn't want to get carried away and try to get all in front and everything, cuz that would just make me poop out sooner. I needed to just find my rhythm and keep up a very steady pace. So, I got into a stride that really felt great and just kept it up the entire time. Alfy was on the corner a couple of times as I ran past, shouting encouragement. Coco, Mom, Marli and Ibis were at other spots and they cheered me on. When you have someone cheering for you, you start to not feel the burn and you go faster. It's a little distraction from what you're doing. As I turned the corner to come into the last stretch, I felt so good and I could see the finish line. So, I kicked it into gear and tried to finish strong. I pulled ahead of a few more people and ran across the finish line. What a sense of accomplishment!!! I feel so good having stuck to this! I'm really liking this sport and I'm going to keep it up for as long as possible..........the added benefits are that my singing is improving because of it, so for that reason alone, I'm keeping it up! Anyway, such a fun time and can't wait for the next one. :o)

On your mark, get set, GO!
Me and Rabeka Harrison after the race. Woo hoo!!

Week 4

September 14th - 20th

Monday (35 minutes running/15 minutes walking - 3.2 miles)
I ran around Granite Hills today again with Coco and Marli behind me until I caught back up with them. Feels great and the weather is cloudy, so it's PERFECT running weather in my opinion. I registered for the Girl Scouts 5K run today. It was $25 and I get a t-shirt......here comes the collection! I can't wait to run. It'll be fun to compete. I haven't been in anything that's been competitive as far as sports goes for quite a while. I'm definitely used to music competitions and auditioning for roles and such.....piece of cake. This will be an entirely different animal for me.

Tuesday (30 minutes running/20 minutes walking - 4 miles)
I got my schedule today from Coach Yarbrough and it looks great! It's a little different than what Rabeka's doing, but we can still run together, just a little different timing. The run felt great today because it was overcast and there was a little chill in the air. Soooo nice! Ran around Granite Hills again. Once my runs get longer, I'll have to venture onto the side streets and probably head over to Greenfield and up near Shadow Mountain from the high school. We'll see what I discover! I'm very excited to now have a coach and to be able to feel like I have my own schedule and training plan. This is new to me, but I feel that you never know if you'll be good at something unless you try!

Wednesday (rest day)
Taking it easy today.

Thursday (30 minutes running)
Ran around Granite Hills again. It felt good. Tomorrow, I will be running a big longer, so I'll be able to discover a new path to run. Lots to do today, so it's nice to get the run in before the day gets away from me!

Friday (45 minutes running/15 minutes walking)
Went running around Granite (again!). I need to branch out here.....Anyway, it felt good and this was the longest run I've done so far. It actually was pretty good. I know that I'll be increasing as the weeks go on and working up little by little is really helping me. Oh, I had a voice lesson last week and both my voice coach and I could tell a HUGE difference in my breath control. Running is really helping me out vocally. So, if nothing comes from my running amibitions, I know I'll definitely want to keep it up regardless since it helps my other passion (and the one that I actually get paid for!). Also, I went to Road Runner Sports today and found that they're having a HUGE blowout clearance sell this weekend. I got two pair of Nike Air Max that are originally $110 for only $25 each!!!! Since the price was soooo right, I decided to buy two pair and some shorts, too. :o) My budget liked that!!

Saturday (30 minutes running)
Couldn't run today because I had to get up at a very early time to get ready for MK Boot Camp. Then, by the time I got home, it was getting dark and I had to be a mommy first! So, no running. Really wanted to try my shoes out! There's always Monday...........

Week 3

September 7th - 13th

Monday (35 minutes running/15 minutes walking)
Went running around Granite Hills today. Coco and Marli walked along and I would run about a half mile and then run back to them. So, total, I probably ran about 3.5 miles today and then walked the rest of the way back as a cool down with Coco and Marli. It felt good. I got in touch with my brother in law's coach, Dave Y. and I'll be meeting with him tonight to map out a training schedule and what I should be doing. I'm very excited to run my first race on the 27th! I like to race. I remember how I used to be in middle school and I kinda feel the same way when I think about running a race soon. :o)

Tuesday
Today was a rest day as I went up to LA to hear my best friend perform on America's Got Talent. So fun and he did great!

Wednesday (35 minutes)
Went running in Rancho San Diego on a new trail to me and down onto the track at Cuyamaca. Very nice and the trails were up and down. Felt really good. I really need to get some new shoes because the ones I have will wear down quickly......still feeling great though and there are no hurting body parts! Woo hoo!

Thursday (35 minutes running/15 walking)
Went running around Granite Hills today. Coco and I started off at the same time, she was walking and I was running. I told her to just keep walking and I'd catch up to her by going around again until I found her. I ended up running at a pretty brisk pace. So, I ran a little over 3 miles by the time I finally caught up with her and lapped her. Then, we walked the rest of the way back to her house. So, it was a pretty good run! It was about 2:00 in the afternoon, so I got some sun and was very sweaty! But, overall, it felt great!

Friday (35 minutes running/25 minutes walking)
I walked this morning with Coco and Marli. Just a quick walk around the block to just warm up a bit. Then, this evening around 5pm, I went running at Mission Trails in Santee. Problem was that there were fires there earlier this week, so there was a bunch of burnt areas that we were running through. So, poor Rabeka started having an asthma attack and we had to cut our run short by just a bit. Not the best air quality to be breathing, especially if you're prone to asthmatic attacks. Actually, it's just plain not good for anyone!!! But, otherwise, it felt great. My left knee is acting up again, though...........need to get new shoes!!!

Saturday
Knee was hurting today, and I had soooo much work to do. So, I didn't run and I feel like it was a smart decision. I'll be picking up the pace next week and I will definitely be getting new shoes so I have them for the race on the 27th!!

Week 2

August 1st - September 6th

Monday (35 minutes)
So, it was Labor Day today and I took all day and basically just worked out! Ibis went to the beach, but watched Marli while I went to the gym in the morning and then went on a 3 mile walk with his mom. That felt good. I went running in the evening at about 8:00. Kinda late, but when you have a buddy with you who carries a knife, it always makes you feel a little better. :o) We ran up Mollison all the way to the end past Pepper and back down to Sandalwood. It's about a 5K and we made pretty good time, too! I haven't run that distance in a few years, so it felt really good and I know that by the time my first race comes around, I'll be doing really well. My body is a little sore, but it's that good sore that tells me that I'm getting closer and closer to my goal! Found out that Alice Anne is also training for a marathon and we'll be keeping each other posted on our progress as the days go on........

Tuesday (35 minutes - 2.8 miles)
I went running over near Granite Hills High School. There is a good figure 8 that I can run that is almost a 3 mile run. So, I went in the late afternoon, which is a little difficult because it was super hot today! But, I stuck it out..........I also had no one to talk to and nothing to listen to except my own thoughts and the people I ran past. So, it was actually a good run. I found myself chanting "I can, I will, I must!" throughout the last half mile. I also find that when I'm running, I start to sing in my head that song by Olivia Newton John - Physical. It has a good beat and a good rhythm for running and setting a pace for yourself. Ha ha ha......also, I started singing in my head Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting - an Elton John song. That's another good pacesetter! Anyway, it felt good and it gave me a good excuse to get out of the house and just hit the pavement!

Wednesday (45 minutes walking - 2.8 miles/30 minutes running)
Went walking this morning with Coco and Marli. Just an easy walk. Not sure if I'll be running today as I think I need to rest. Well, I guess I'll be running this afternoon. Couldn't resist going. I've had an issue with my left knee. It's not anything with the joints, just the muscles around it....I need to be very careful about making sure I fully stretch out before and after a run or walk. I can tell that my body is not used to all the stretching, but I'm finding that it's paying off. It doesn't take as much to limber up anymore since I'm stretching consistently now. So, I went running and I felt a little fatigued. I think it was just because I have been subjecting my body to something that it hasn't had to do in a long time. It still felt good, though to run. It was a horribly hot day today, so that might have something to do with it!

Thursday (45 minutes walking - 2.8 miles/30 minutes running - 5K)
Went walking with Coco and Marli again. Won't be running today as I have too much to do. Also, my body needs a day off. :o) I'll be getting acupuncture for the first time tomorrow to ease my muscles. That should feel great! Also, I'm considering going to the chiropractor for the first time. It will be interesting to see just how far out of alignment my poor body is! I think I need to wait until the day is done because I DID run today.....went running over from Sandalwood up Mollison, past Pepper and back again. It's about a 5K. It felt soooooo good. Even though it's been super hot lately, it still feels good at night and the sun isn't beating down on you! So, I did run today and my body is getting very used to this daily event......easier and easier as we go....

Friday (30 minutes running)
Went and got acupuncture today. Felt soooooooooooo good. and my leg felt awesome afterward. Definitely will be going back there. Also, it's free the first Friday of every month, so what more could you ask for?? Although, I'd pay for it....it's only $15-$35 per session, so you can't beat that, either! Went running around the figure 8 and Granite Hills High School. There was a football game going on against Mission Bay, so we couldn't actually run on the track. MB was leading 20 to 7. Anyway, it felt really good to run, especially after that acupuncture. Super relaxed and stretched out. :o)

Saturday (40 minutes)
Went running around 8:00 pm again. It's nice to run in the evening and to have it be at least a little cooler. At least no sun beating down your neck and in your eyes. We ran up near Granite again and ran a few times around the new track. It's fake grass, but it still feels great to run on and the benefit is that there aren't any holes in the "grass", so you don't have to worry about twisting your ankle. Well, the down side is that it was very dark there.....I started to feel a little odd feeling and then Rabeka decided to cut across the field and just said, "follow me and head straight out from the field." So, we booked it like crazy out of there. I didn't see what she saw, but apparently, she saw a figure over by the shed and got a very creepy feeling. There are many people out and about in the area, but it's just so darn dark that it can get a little eerie. We hightailed it out of there and a little ways from the field we said a quick prayer. (don't worry mom!) Felt MUCH better after that but I still wanted to keep up the tempo of our run just to make it home! Definitely going to try to run earlier and we will definitely be praying before each run! The run itself felt really good and my goodness, what a little adrenaline can do to your speed and your abilities!!!

Week 1

August 24th - 30th

Monday (25 minutes)
Wow! So I started training to build up my base. I haven't ever really run anything before except in middle school where I outran all the boys....but that doesn't really provide much of a benchmark for me. So, here I go. I actually used to run when I worked at Kolod*Wager Law
Offices with Cyn and would run about 2.5 to 3 miles everyday during our lunchbreak. I stopped running with her and started walking because we were running on the sidewalks which is the WORST thing you can possibly run on. I could tell that if I didn't stop, I'd have some serious knee issues. I feel great now and my first run on Monday was great! I reached that point about 1/2 a mile into it that I could keep running for hours.....I love that feeling. Most runners will run with headphones and listen to music. I find that that sometimes will help make the time pass, but I just love running with my own thoughts. Of course, running with a buddy is always good too to help push you along. But, I like just getting absorbed in my own thoughts. After my mission to Nauvoo, I would go running by myself (which was weird because I was always with someone on my mission!) and I would find myself just praying constantly throughout the whole run. It's true that running is the simplest sport and the best way to get in touch with who you are and why you're doing what you're doing.

Wednesday (15 minutes)
I was up in San Pedro when I ran today.....it's very hilly here and I didn't know the neighborhood, so I just ran until I didn't feel I could take another hill. I know that it says I only ran 15 minutes, but hey I'm just starting! We'll see if I'm cut out for long distance running soon enough..........

Friday (25 minutes)
Went running on the short loop in Rancho again and I felt great! Hit that point again where I felt I could keep going but I know since I don't have much experience, I can't push it too much! I've been stretching a lot lately because I am sooooo wanting my dancer body back! We'll see how running will affect that goal. It just feels really good to stretch again and gain back my flexibility.

Saturday (35 minutes)
Went running behind Edwards Rancho Cinema and LOVED IT! Great trail (happens to be a horse trail) to run and saw some golfers out on the course as we ran by. However, about five minutes into the run it started pouring! I've never run in a full on rainstorm, but I loved it. The rain felt so good and it definitely cooled me off. I felt good running and at the end of the run, we couldn't cross the little creek since it was now too much of a muddy incline. So, we had to go around and add a little extra to the run. Can't wait to increase my running time and mileage. Need to get some new running shoes and socks............
